This introductory event grants you access to the experienced and knowledgeable business leaders of LWRBA in order to establish relationships and potentially, a mentorship. At Mentor Connect, you will engage in several short, but authentic discussions about the topics of your choosing, and you will receive instant guidance and professional development – all in a quick-paced and exciting environment.

Mentors Needed!

We are beginning to recruit mentors to participate in this year’s Mentor Connect, the Young Leaders Alliance’s annual mentorship program. The event is currently set for June 11th. Given the program’s long planning period, we are moving forward with that date in mind. We’ll be flexible and communicate any changes should it come to that.

Now in its 4th year, Mentor Connect is a springboard to establish relationships between the experienced and knowledgeable business leaders of within the LWRBA and emerging young professionals in the YLA. This program will provide professional development for both parties and will give the mentors an opportunity to transfer their wisdom and experience to mentees, empowering them to become the future business leaders in Manatee and Sarasota counties.

As a mentor, you are agreeing to:

  • Attend the Mentor Connect event on Thursday, June 11 from 5:30 to 8 pm
  • Share your knowledge and insights with tomorrow’s leaders!
  • Meet with a mentee at least once post-event, if requested
  • Provide feedback to YLA committee regarding the Mentor Connect event

If you are interested in participating as Mentor, please complete and return the Mentor Agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions

When and where is the event?
The event is Thursday June 11, 2020 from 5:30 pm to 8 pm. The event will be held at Cowork LWR and the Culinary Innovation Lab at USF Sarasota-Manatee. The physical address is 8130 Lakewood Main St #103 and #104, Lakewood Ranch, FL 34202. There are multiple parking lots surrounding Lakewood Ranch Main Street, as well as street parking. The closest parking lot is located east of Main Street (behind the building).

How does the event work?
Prior to the event, mentees are asked to complete a survey including three questions where they would like mentorship. Mentees will be paired up with three mentors in advance based on these questions. During the event, each mentor and mentee will meet with each other and be given 20 minutes to discuss their predetermined questions. The mentees will rotate stations to meet with each of their mentors and afterwards there will be time for networking as well as food and drinks to enjoy.

What is the time commitment?
We ask that mentors arrive to the event by 5:15 pm and participate until 8 pm. Additionally, we ask that the mentors accommodate one post-event meeting if requested by the mentee at a mutually agreed upon date and time.

What are the expectations?
Mentors: The expectation of mentors is to sign a mentor agreement committing you to the event and selecting the areas you are comfortable providing mentorship. We ask that you review the questions your mentees submitted and offer your experience and guidance on these questions. Mentors may also help their mentees with career development, leadership, setting goals, developing contacts, and identifying resources.

Mentees: The expectation of the mentees is to take advantage of their mentors’ backgrounds to gain insight and learn from their experiences. To maximize the mentor/mentee experience, mentees should come prepared with their questions and set specific goals for themselves. If a connection is made with a mentor at the event, the mentee should follow up with them and request an additional meeting. The more mentees put into the mentor relationship, the more they will get out of it!

How are mentors and mentees selected?
Mentors are paired with mentees based on the questions submitted by the mentees and the areas of mentorship mentors have selected to provide guidance on. Career experience and industries are also considered when pairing mentors with mentees.

When is the deadline to sign up as a mentor?
For planning purposes, we ask that potential mentors submit their mentor agreement to Amy Treis by April 30th. The mentors who have been selected will be notified via email by May 8th and will be given their assigned mentees along with their questions prior to the event.

When is the deadline to register as a mentee?
Mentees will need to register and submit their questions by May 22nd.
